Panthers coach Ron Rivera told a news conference there is no specific timetable for Newton’s return.
“What Cam needs right now is time and rest for his foot. We want him at 100 percent when he’s ready, so there’s no exact timetable for his return,” he said. “At this point, we’re going to go forward with Kyle [Allen] as our starter.”
Carolina will feel a bit more confident about moving ahead with Allen after his impressive season debut in Sunday’s 38-20 win at Arizona.
The 23-year-old Scottsdale native was 19-for-26 passing with 261 yards and four touchdowns and a 144.4 passer rating against the Arizona Cardinals.
The Texans should present a more difficult obstacle to Allen and the Panthers’ offense than the Arizona defense did in Week 3.
Newton, who has completed 50 of 89 passes for 572 yards with an interception and two fumbles in two games this season, initially hurt his foot in the preseason and reaggravated the injury in Carolina’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2.
