This news was confirmed via a lengthy Call of Duty blog post, which provided several details about Call of Duty: Vanguard Zombies and its launch experience Der Anfang. Treyarch revealed that Der Anfang’s main quest easter egg is not coming until after Season 1, meaning that players will have to wait until Season 2 to see the story progress, which could cause a lot of frustration amongst the Zombies community.

Der Anfang is already a risky map, as it is not a traditional round-based experience that players have come to know and love. Instead, it will play like a mixture of Outbreak and Zombies Onslaught, with players needing to complete objectives in different areas. While Der Anfang not being endless was already surprising, the fact that it will not have a main quest ready on day one could lead some to feeling like it is unfinished.
It is worth noting that Treyarch is likely following in the footsteps of Outbreak once again when it comes to that delay. The first main quest for Outbreak did not come at launch, instead dropping several months later after players had gotten a feel for the mode and it had expanded a bit. The same thing could happening with Der Anfang, as Treyarch may be waiting to add new objectives and locations before making the main quest available. It remains to be seen if Der Anfang will get two main quests like Outbreak, however.
This is a rarity for Call of Duty Zombies, as players have had at least one main quest easter egg to complete on every launch day since Call of Duty: Black Ops 2. While Call of Duty: World at War and the original Call of Duty: Black Ops did not have any on the day of release, this is purely because main quests did not exist yet, as the first came alongside the Black Ops DLC map Ascension. Given how some people focus entirely on easter egg hunting, this could be a major blow to a large part of the Zombies community.
Hopefully, Der Anfang features several small easter eggs to make the wait more bearable. With Call of Duty: Vanguard Season 1 only confirmed to be bringing a Der Anfang objective, more Covenants, and main quest teasers, though, it will be a long wait before the main quest arrives.
Call of Duty: Vanguard launches November 5 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
