The app is fairly functional except for some minor reoccurring problems that appear. The Activision Companion App Developer has released a workaround for one of the more common problems, the offline appearance of squads within the app.

The developer recommends that players log in using the email and password option instead of the first-party account, which should fix the issue and show squads as active within the Call of Duty companion app. To find out the email and password for first-party accounts, players must log in to the main Call of Duty website and go into their profile. From there players an see the email associated with the account and can set a new password if needed.
The developer expects that the issue will be corrected in the next build of the app and players will be able to see active squads. In addition to this fix, they are addressing a different inactive squad error that interacts with the weekly tournament structure. The next build should be released on Monday morning with the corrections made.
As of right now, the Call of Duty companion app supports Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and Call of Duty: WWII. The main function of the app is to allow players a chance to compete against friends and see how they rate against their squad. Extra tools within the app can allow players an extra edge over the competition, along with additional rewards for opening it every week.
The Call of Duty companion app has been generally well-received by fans. With this upcoming fix, the squad functionality will improve and players will have a more active feed of their stats in the weekly tournaments.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available for PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
