New reports, leaks, and discoveries are starting to form a unique picture of what Call of Duty 2020, also known as Call of Duty: Cold War, will be. Although it is expected that the core cast of returning characters will have new voice actors; no one expected that Alex Mason and Frank Woods would be making an unexpected return.

A recent surge of Easter eggs, leaks, and information suggests that Woods and Mason might swap roles in the next Call of Duty game. It is unclear to what extent this swap will be, but there is a large amount of evidence building that suggests it will happen. Leaked files in the latest update have suggested that Frank Woods will be appearing in Warzone and Modern Warfare as an Operator in the near future.
Mix that with the mysterious note that appeared in a recent Easter egg, which makes reference to a prisoner being kept in a “Spire Box.” Black Ops fans are assuming that the prisoner could be Woods, making the idea of a role reversal even more plausible. In a famous scene from Black Ops 4, Woods tells Mason that he has always been in the box. If Woods is stuck in the “Spire Box” then that might be a reversal from this scene.
Fans are still unsure of exactly how the role reversal would work. Most of this information is built upon fragments and speculation. Although the leak that points towards Frank Woods returning to the series has some serious credibility along with voice lines that confirm a new voice actor.
None of this information has been officially released. Neither Treyarch nor Activision have commented on these leaks, reports, or pieces of speculation. It is unlikely that they ever will confirm it as the wait for news on Call of Duty: Cold War continues.
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is available on PS4, PC, and Xbox One.
